The New Buzzword
It's easy to predict: Affordability will be the new buzzword as we learn to tighten our belts. The economy has forced most of us to reexamine how we spend our money, or more specifically, how to spend less and get more. Fortunately, the RV industry is responding with some creative answers.
Along those lines, I asked the contributing writers to come up with the best ways to illustrate affordability. First-time contributor Nick Green called his off-highway adventure "No Bucks RVing," a personal account of how to enjoy a weekend getaway by sharing the costs with friends. It's how a 30-something generation deals with skyrocketing costs by renting an RV and watching what they eat. Nick said peanut butter and jelly never tasted so good.
Writer and fellow outdoorsman Mitchell Sam Rossi took a fun approach with "Outdoor Kid's Stuff," a look at keeping kids entertained in the outdoors by designing their own explorer kit, using everyday products that are cheap and easily replaceable.
Essentially, what RV Magazine is promoting is getting the most bang for your hard-earned buck.
Matt Thacker of Custom RV and Chris Baum of Little Guy Worldwide run companies that are reaching out to budget-minded consumers with their lines of lightweight trailers that harkens back to the earlier times of RVing, when all we needed was a place to sleep, eat and enjoy the outdoors. Nothing fancy. Matt and I met one afternoon and he explained the positives of lightweight fold-down and upright TrailManor trailers, and I took note. There's a glimpse of Custom RV's new Elkmont single-axle on the cover, and plans are already being made for a weekend road test in a TrailManor behind a 1/2-ton. Chris is the chief operating officer of Little Guy Worldwide, the world's largest outlet for teardrop camper trailers. If you know anything about these trailers, then you know that they are all about bonding with Mother Nature in the cheapest possible way. I met with Chris at Bear's RV and Auto Sales as he established yet another new distribution outlet for those living in and around Los Angeles. Teardrops are cool-looking and extremely inexpensive trailers to own. Better yet, even if you drive a Mini Cooper, you can find a teardrop that works for you.
Frankly, I'll take smaller, lightweight vehicles any day over fiscal irresponsibility. And that's what I hope this issue drives home to the overall RV market. Spend wisely, my friends, and learn to enjoy more for a lot less.
These are just a sampling of the things we're working on at RV Magazine. As always, between issues you can find us at www.rvmagonline.com for new posts, blogs, and other details about RVing and camping. Or follow us on Twitter and Facebook!
