As summer quickly approaches, it is the perfect time to talk towing. At this time of year the biggest percentage of the RVing public will be towing some type of trailer — single, dual, or even triple axle — to a destination near or far. As we all know, towing is not to be taken lightly. There are some basic concepts and rules about towing that just can’t be talked about enough. Especially the safety factor.
This issue’s towing guide highlights 32 of the most popular products from a crosscut of manufacturers big and small. Contributing writer Bobby Black researched the story for RV to uncover only the top-rated products relating to both fifth-wheel and bumper-pull systems. The guide is categorized by sections to make reading easy and informative.
Cooler Tow Rigs
Engines and transmissions are under lots of stress under tow, and thanks to Diesel Tech in San Jacinto, California, we learned a thing or two about preventing premature transmission failures due to heat. The story revolves around 7.3L Fords that are prone to early transmission issues, but the general concept applies to other trucks, as well. This story pinpoints some key areas to upgrade like the transmission cooler and transmission pan.
Hitches
B&W and Curt are some of the biggest names in towing, and for good reason: they make quality products designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle. This issue’s story on B&W’s Companion and Turnover Ball is like getting two hitches in one! It shows in some detail the versatility that this 18K fifth-wheel hitch offers. In the Fall issue, RV will look at the new three-point indicator system on the 20K Curt fifth-wheel for short- and long-bed trucks. You won’t want to miss that one.
On the Road
None of us enjoy the thought of backing down a mountain road because there’s no turnaround big enough to accommodate the RV. Well then, be sure to take note of Mark Quasius’ “Road to Yellowstone,” a traveler’s account of which roads to take leading into the park and which ones to be leery of entering. It’s a must-read for all travelers.
A Childhood Memory
Inside, Phil Noyes tells the story of the Shank family, who in 1949 began enjoying the great outdoors with a used Jeep and trailer. Today, Larry Shank recalls the fantastic adventures of growing up in a family that loved to explore the wilderness.
Downsizing the Class A
Mark Quasius’ review of the Allegro Breeze from Tiffin Motorhomes suggests that this diesel-pusher is going to revolutionize the industry. I think you’ll agree. And writer G.R. Whale has some great things to say about his test drive in the 2011 Winnebago Via, another diesel-powered coach that’s been downsized for an emerging market of fuel-conscious consumers.
